Pet Information

Hilton Head Island Beach Animal Regulations
During the summertime, from the Friday before Memorial Day through the Tuesday after Labor Day, dogs can only be on the beach before 10am and then after 5pm (they are not allowed from 10am to 5pm). Pets must be leashed. During the off-season and winter months, from April 1 through the Thursday before Memorial Day, dogs must be on a leash between 10am and 5pm. From the Tuesday after Labor Day through September 30, dogs again must be on a leash between 10am and 5pm. At all other times, dogs may be off-leash, but must be under direct, positive voice control. People are required to clean up after their pets.

Picking up the result of your dog's potty break is one of the single most important tips for those visiting the Beach and our dog parks. There are not an over abundance of beaches and dog parks that are pet friendly so think of it as a treasure you want to protect. As pet owners, we need to promote the ongoing success of pet friendly beach and dog parks. This means picking up after our dogs and even picking up after others who did not pickup after their dogs. Work on leaving the area cleaner than it was when you arrived. It's a small price to pay for being allowed to enjoy beaches parks with your dog.

Yappy Hour
Tail-Waggers Gourrnet Pet Bakery and Gifts in Coligny Plaza sponsors a Free Yappy Hour for you dog from 6-7 pm every Tuesday Evening. Your dog will not want to miss this event.

Pet Info for Dogs on Hilton Head Island

Although Hilton Head is only 12 miles long, it has become a famous vacation destination because it offers a variety of activities with a breathtaking view. Hilton Head is actually an island located in the southern part of South Carolina, approximately 45 minutes away from Savannah, Georgia.

Hilton Head is particularly famous for the world class golf courses and Tennis Courts. It is also gaining a reputation as a Pet Friendly Resort.

Visitors to Hilton Head will soon realize that most of the beaches, parks and walkways in the area are pet friendly, making this an excellent place to bring pets when renting a Hilton Head vacation rental home from Hilton Head Hideaways.

Hilton Head Beaches There are four main public beaches in Hilton Head and dogs are allowed at these beaches throughout the year during a variety of different hours. During the peak season, from Memorial Day until after Labor Day weekend, dogs are only allowed on the beach before 10am or after 5pm and they must remain on the leash. Before Memorial Day or after Labor Day dogs can be on the beach at all times.

From Labor Day until the end of September and again from April 1 to May 30, dogs must remain on the leash from 10am to 5pm but before and after these hours dogs are allowed off the leash. From October 1 through April 1 there are no leash rules for dogs.

Best Friends Dog Park
Located right in the heart of Hilton Head, on the east side off of William Hilton Parkway, this park offers a fenced area for dogs to run without a leash. There are beach access areas outside of the dog park in Chaplain Park but dogs must be leashed to gain access to this area. Remember to bring a pooper scooper, as the city requires dog park users to clean up after their pets. Directions: just off Hwy. 278 Business at Singleton Beach Road, next to Chaplin Community Park. Directions: Hwy. 278 is the main road onto Hilton Head. The park is mid-island, left turn, follow signs.

The following is a Review of Best Friends Dog Park written by Tony Lucas, one of our Guests who has stayed with us the last 6 years. His black Lab is Misty.

"It is a great place to take your dog on Hilton Head Island. A large, fenced in, well maintained dog park with plenty of shade trees, benches to sit on and a drinking fountain for your dog. Your dog can run free and play with other dogs in the park. There is a separate fenced in area for small dogs. Lots of dogs on the weekends. Many people seem to take their dogs to the park in mid morning before it gets too hot."
Directions from Sea Pines:
· From Greenwood Circle, take Business 278 (Wm. Hilton Parkway) for 4.2 miles.
· Take a right at light onto Singleton Beach Road (Exxon sign and Harold’s Diner is on the corner.)
· Turn left at Chaplin Community Park.
· Left into the parking lot.

Pet Friendly Cruises
Most boat tours will allow you to bring your pet with you, such as the Dolphin Cruise out of Harbour Town. Please check with your service provider before doing so.

Calibogue Cruises to Daufuskie Island Daufuskie Island is a more deserted location just south of Hilton Head that offers excellent nature tours and natural sightseeing. For visitors interested in exploring the island with their pets, animals are allowed on the ferry ride if they are leashed. While there are tour bus rides through the island, dogs are not allowed on these, although dog owners can rent golf carts to share with their animals and explore the island.

For those interested in a trip to Daufuskie, reservations for the ferry need to be made at least two hours in advance by calling the Broad Creek Marina at 843-342-8687. The marina is located off of Mathews drive, on the southwest side of the island.

Pet Friendly Mall
The indoor Mall at Shelter Cove is now Pet Friendly. No need to leave you pet in the car!
